1.What is a Day Master (日元)?
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar in BaZi. It represents the core element used to understand your personal BaZi chart.
For example, if your Day Master is 丙 Fire, your chart is interpreted around 丙火 as the central reference point.
2. What are the Ten Heavenly Stems (十天干)?
he Ten Heavenly Stems are the ten fundamental symbols used in BaZi:

4. What are the Four Pillars (四柱)?
Your BaZi chart consists of four pillars:
Year Pillar · Month Pillar · Day Pillar · Hour Pillar
Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, creating a total of eight characters, which is why BaZi is also called 八字 (Eight Characters).
The four pillars provide different perspectives on your chart, while the Day Master serves as the central reference for personal analysis.
5. What are the Five Elements (五行)?
Wood · Fire · Earth · Metal · Water
In *Ba Zi* (Four Pillars of Destiny) numerology, these elements are far more than mere personality labels; they engage in dynamic relationships of generation and control. For instance, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood. Conversely, Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal controls Wood.
For this reason, one cannot determine your specific elemental characteristics based solely on your Chinese zodiac sign.
6. What is Tiao Hou (调候)?
“Climatic balancing” (*tiaohou*) is a traditional concept in *Ba Zi* (Four Pillars of Destiny) analysis and serves as a crucial reference point. Its purpose is to balance the climatic and seasonal characteristics reflected in the birth chart.
The month and season of birth influence the chart’s inherent climatic qualities—such as cold, heat, dryness, or dampness. “Climatic balancing” evaluates which of the Five Elements’ energies would help create a more balanced overall structure.
For instance, a specific chart might require a particular element to moderate its seasonal climatic traits.
“Climatic balancing” is distinct from the concept of “Day Master strength” (the strength of the self-element); regardless of whether the Day Master is strong or weak, climatic balancing is necessary. The two should not be conflated or treated as the same type of calculation. However, it is considered ideal—an added bonus—if the element required for climatic balancing also happens to be a favorable or useful element for the Day Master.
7. What does Day Master Strength mean? (日元旺衰)
Day Master strength describes whether the Day Master receives relatively strong or weak support within the BaZi chart.

The result is expressed as:

8. Why can't I determine my Five Elements just from my Chinese zodiac sign?
Your Chinese zodiac sign comes from your Year Branch, which is only one part of your BaZi chart.
A complete BaZi chart contains:
Year + Month + Day + Hour
Each contains a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, creating eight characters in total.
Therefore, two people born in the same zodiac year can have very different BaZi charts and different Five Element patterns.
